#2 All you can do is take one step at a time
One of the most daunting things about a marathon is that 26.2 miles is a long damn way to run. No matter how you pace yourself, regardless of how perfect the conditions might be, the sheer magnitude of the distance can be intimidating. If you start at my house up by Walnut Hill and the Toll Road in Dallas you’d be talking about running to the Ballpark in Arlington.
And still having 2 miles left.
There’s only one way to prepare yourself for this kind of distance, and that’s to think about it in manageable pieces. Some serious runners talk about breaking it up into three races which all have different strategic realities. I tend to be a little more basic. When I am tempted to quit in the middle of the race – and that temptation arises in every single race I’ve ever run – I do one thing that works every time
I simply tell myself to just keep running. Put one foot in front of the other. That’s all I think about. Not how much distance is left, not how tired I might be or how hot it is, or whatever external factor seems to be the most compelling reason to stop. And if I do that and nothing else, then I know that eventually I will get to the end of the marathon.
Running a business is the same way. You get tired. External factors make it hard. The economic environment doesn’t always cooperate. And sometimes, you might be tempted to give up and stop. Pack it in and stop the pain.
And when you get to that place, whether you’re running a marathon or running your business, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. It works.
Business is tough. Hang in. If we can help you, just let us know.
